A Muse at Advent: December 5

Massachusetts experienced its first snowfall overnight. Opening the curtains to a blanket of white on the ground still fills me with childlike wonder. I love snow. There’s only about an inch on the ground but it’s enough to put a spring in my step and a song in my heart. And that brings us to door number 5.

December 5, 2024

Growing up I shared a room with my sister. Well, it was her room first so I should say that she kindly shared her room with me. She loved to listen to music. She introduced me to her favorite artists and taught me all the words to their songs. Naturally, her favorites became my favorites: Bonnie Rait, Carole King, James Taylor to name a few. I loved listening to them all, but James Taylor really struck a chord with me. His seemingly simple melodies, soft spoken tone, and poetic lyrics painted pictures in my mind that I still look at today.

As I look at the snow that fell on the fifth of December, I begin to sing my favorite James Taylor song “Sweet Baby James.” In the second verse he tells us that the first of December was covered with snow. I realize that today is the fifth, but that’s a small edit to make and I’m sure James won’t mind. And while today’s storm was small and the turnpike was probably just wet from Stockbridge to Boston, it’s a sign that winter is, indeed, on its way. We’ve got 10 miles behind us and 10,000 more to go until spring, but it sure is pretty out there.

If you’d like, press play and sing along because singing works just fine for me.
